MUSIC: Dru Bex – Sirens

dru-bex-sirens-1000New single from Toronto, Canada based emcee Dru Bex. Q-Pon handles the beat production.

Through social media, touring and traveling in general, I’ve been blessed to connect with many brothers and sisters who reside in the United States. Often times, when I say I’m from Canada, I get asked the same question: “what are the police like on your side?” Of course they are referring to what seems like endless conflict between the police departments and the black populations of many U.S. cities.

The truth is, while racism is overall less prevalent here, we are by no means guiltless. Indeed, in an immensely multicultural city like Toronto, there are still many blacks and people of other races who have, or will, encounter racism in lifetime. This has sometimes led to tensions between the racialized populations and the police, who are mostly made up of white men and women from outside the areas they police.

Being repeatedly asked this question from my American peers, I began to reflect on my experiences growing up as a black person in the Toronto area. I began to recall many incidents of both covert and overt racism.

My hope with this song, is to shed some light on what many people of color in Canada experience. By no means is this a reflection of the worst kind of thing that happens, but these are just a couple of my stories.” – Dru Bex
