Transparent – Str8 Like That
Northern Calis Golden State Warrior, Transparent has become one of the most exciting new artists in CHH after he dominated the BET Merge Summit Artist Show Case in 2013. He commanded the attention of the industry when he released his smash hit “One Way”, which was featured on ESPN First Take and earned him the “Breakthrough Artist of the Year Award” at the 2014 Kingdom Choice awards. After a whole year of capitalizing on the success of “One Way” Transparent has recently released his latest single “Str8 Like That” feat ADA-L and produced by Black Knight.
“Str8 Like That” is a song that flex’s the production of northern Cali native Black Knight. The minimalistic style of production is complimented by Transparent. Transparent rides the beat well with his laid back flow and delivery and his deep gravelly voice harmonizes well with the repetitive bass line that carries on throughout the entire song. The lyrical content of the song wasn’t very intricate or deep, but that wasn’t a bad thing because it allowed me to enjoy the entire song without having to focus on deciphering the lyrics. Although the lyrics to “Str8 Like That” may not be very elaborate, they speak volumes of the type of mind set believers should have. With lyrics like “Not Nipsey but I hustle/ Hurry Up Save The Lost Everywhere on the double/ And if you caught it then you know what the mission be/ he commissioned me/ so you know Im bout that life when they mention me” I was able to enjoy the song and be encourage/edified as a believer.
As much as I enjoyed “Str8 Like That” I didn’t feel like it was a stronger single than “One Way”. Presenting an audience and your contemporaries with a strong single or body of work when you’re first introducing yourself to them can be a gift and a curse. On one hand you gain tons of exposure and attention and on the other hand you now have to either meet or exceed your new audience’s expectations with your next project. “Str8 Like That” is a great song if you don’t compare it to “One Way”, but in comparison it just okay in my opinion.
All comparisons a side I liked listening to “Str8 Like That”, so much so that I still bought it off of iTunes even though I got the song for free. You can preview the song on Soundcloud below and purchase the song with the provided itunes link.
