Former NBA Commissioner David Stern has passed away today at the age of 77. He was the commissioner of the NBA from 1984 – 2014.
During his tenure, the NBA became one of the most popular leagues in the world and increased television revenue from $10 million per year to approximately $900 million per year. After stepping down, Stern would continue to address issues in the NBA; among other ideas, Stern changed his position to promote legalized betting in the United States and said marijuana should be taken off the NBA’s banned substance list.
Stern was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014.
